Unistress Wins 2011 PCI Design Award for 164th Street Garage
Congratulations to Unistress for winning a PCI Design Award in the Parking Structures 0-999 cars category
for the 164th Street Garage in Bronx, New York.
Adjacent to the new Yankee stadium, this five-tier, 660-space precast garage serves as the fourth façade
of the stadium. With white precast concrete and stainless steel mesh panels, the garage fits the stadium’s
neo-traditional design. To protect the adjacent stadium from explosive devices, the NYPD Joint Terrorism Task Force
required that the garage include a hardened 12-in.-thick, 50-ft-tall reinforced structural concrete wall on the south
façade. The wall was designed using a single-degree-of-freedom dynamic loading model to simulate the blast loading.
Unistress’s award will be presented at the PCI Convention in Salt Lake City in October.
Unistress Wins 2011 PCI Design Award for DCR Access Road Bridge
Congratulations to Unistress for winning a PCI Design Award in the Transportation: Nonhighway Bridges category for
the DCR Access Road Bridge in Randolph, Massachusetts.
The structure of this pedestrian/equestrian bridge consists of a precast channel design—a segmental deck with
the primary support girders integrated with the parapets. The design allowed an increase in clearance and elimination
of two of three existing piers while maintaining existing approach grades. As a fully post-tensioned design, the deck
is highly durable and requires little maintenance. Because the deck is part of the precast section, the entire
superstructure was erected in only four weeks. The design was specifically developed to protect the scenic character
of the surrounding parkland.
Unistress’s award will be presented at the PCI Convention in Salt Lake City in October.
J.P. Carrara & Sons Wins 2011 PCI Design Award (co-winner) and Harry H. Edwards Industry Advancement Award for Cross Street Bridge
Congratulations to J.P. Carrara & Sons for winning a PCI Design Award in the Transportation: Main Span More
Than 150’ category and the Harry H. Edwards Industry Advancement Award category for the Cross Street Bridge
in the town of Middlebury, Vermont.
This two-lane, three-span bridge boasts a 240-ft center span, making it the longest simple-span precast, post-tensioned
spliced concrete girder bridge in the U.S. The main span is anchored by a pair of 120-ft-long adjacent box beam spans.
The center span includes five modified New England bulb tee girder lines, each consisting of three individual segments,
64 ft, 108 ft, and 64 ft respectively. The precaster was required to produce a 10,000-PSI self-consolidating concrete mix
to meet the design demands on the large girders.
J.P. Carrara & Sons’s award will be presented at the PCI Convention in Salt Lake City in October.

High Performance Precast Student Housing Applications
The high-performance concrete housing project requires an understanding of the performance of both the structural support system, and the
precast concrete floor system, as well as the interaction of both. This ”Lunch & Learn” presentation helps the specifier
understand precast building systems using hollowcore plank. Topics being presented include: Fabrication and installation procedures, proper
detailing requirements, building envelope considerations, fire resistance, blast resistance, acoustical benefits and sustainability considerations.
PCINE provides several PCI publications for the office library and presentations conducted at noon-time include a complimentary lunch.

PCI Structural Design Seminar October 5, 2011 - Albany, N.Y.
The PCI Structural Design Seminar is a course for both engineers who have designed with precast/prestressed concrete in the past, as well
as those who have not. This course will guide attendees through a quick preliminary design of a three-story, integrated precast office building
using the PCI Design Handbook, 7th edition, as a reference.
Co-sponsored by ASCE-SEI
Seminar Details:
Continuing Education Credits - Attendees will earn 7.5 Professional Development Hours (PDH) or 7.5 HSW-Learning Units (LU). A certificate
will be provided at the conclusion of the seminar and attendance data will be submitted to the National Council of Examiners of Engineers
and Surveyors, for which PCI is a Registered Continuing Education Provider. Attendance data will be submitted to AIA for any AIA member.
Seminar Benefits - Attendees will receive a copy of the PCI Design Handbook, 7th edition or a CD-only copy of the handbook

PCI & Sika Announces 2012 Big Beam Contest/Begins August 15
PCI has announced competition guidelines for the 2011-12 Big Beam Contest. Each student team must work with a PCI Producer Member to build a precast-prestressed concrete beam which is 18 ft. long and tested as a 16 foot span. The beams will be tested and prizes awarded for best performance in the stated areas. Students must discuss both the structural design and the concrete mix design for the beam. Note: The loading pattern is changed for 2011-12.
The contest begins August 15, 2011 and ends June 15, 2012. All beams must be fabricated and tested within this time frame. Results are due by June 15, 2012 at PCI Headquarters.
Thanks to Sika for sponsoring the PCI Big Beam Contest.
