A 140,000 square foot dormitory which houses approximately 400 students was the first all structural precast building on campus apart from parking structures. The structure was comprised of about 500 precast, prestressed concrete components.
Blakeslee worked closely with other members of the design/build team from the inception in determining the most cost-effective layout of the structure satisfying the UCONN program requirements. With the entire team working together in the design development phase utilizing a precast structural system, sufficient information was developed so both the construction documents and precast drawings could be completed simultaneously. This allowed Blakeslee to begin both manufacturing and erection on a fast track schedule.
The original schedule had the project completing in two (2) phases, however because of Blakeslee's precast solution and the team working together from the beginning, construction was completed in one-phase 2-1/2 months ahead of schedule.
